Mr. Richard Siegel - teacher

Class unknown or other

I just wanted to add a few lines about Mr. Richard Siegel. Although Blaine and Kersten were both a few years older than me, Mr. Siegel began impacting my life at around age 6. My dad and I had just finished mowing the lawn as we sat on the grass high on the hill. We could see the Glenwood kids warming up for a game of football in the field. My dad walked me across the street, introduced me, and the rest was history.

Mr. Siegel crossed the street and knocked on the door to see if "Matt could come out and play" each and every time a game was about to start.

It didn't matter that I was smaller than the others, he always encouraged me to try my best and to hit back if needed. I'll NEVER forget the million kickball, hockey, pool-volleyball games, or even the old freeze tag. He lived like a kid and stayed happy running thousands of miles across the area. He was a champion. He was a good husband and an even better father.

I don't have the details of his death and honestly can't even remember what day it was when I got up to speak at the service. All I can say is that he was a great man, an excellent teacher and I'm extremely proud to see that his name lives on with scholarships for Gators who never had the joy of taking Psychology with Mr. Siegel (thanks Mr. Douds). --- Matt Porter

He liked the following Irish blessing: "It's easy to be pleasant when life flows like a song. But the man worthwhile is the one who can smile when everything goes dead wrong. For the test of the heart is trouble, and it always comes with years. And the smile that is worth the praises of earth is the smile that shines through the tears."There will be no public visitation and, following a blessing at the James W. Shirley Funeral Home Inc., interment at New St. Joseph Cemetery, North Versailles, will be private. There will be a memorial service for family and friends at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at the JAMES W. SHIRLEY FUNERAL HOME INC., Clay Pike, North Huntingdon. Tuesday, December 19, 2006

By Eleanor Chute, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Retired Gateway Elementary School principal Bruce Short can still picture Michael O'Toole, then principal of Gateway High School, sitting at his desk in his office with a cigar in his mouth.

"He always told you the way it was," Mr. Short said. "He was firm but fair."

Mr. O'Toole, who died at the age of 89 at Braddock Hospital on Sunday, was a no-nonsense principal.

Robert E McNeill

Class of 1960

Robert (Bob) McNeill, of Ocala Florida, formerly of Pitcairn, passed away December 21, 2006. A memorial service will be held on March 3, 2007 at 1:00 pm at Hope Luthern Church of Forest Hills (353 Ridge Ave). We are asking that anyone attending bring something that reminds you of Bob. He was the husband of Janet (Queen), father of Tammy and Robert Jr, and grandfather of Megan, Dillon and Jenna Eve, brother of Catherine Rosenbayer, Linda Trinchero, Richard McNeill and the late Gerald McNeill. I just wanted his friends to know how much my Uncle Bob loved Gateway football! He came home in the fall of 2005 to attend a "midget" football reunion and while he was here he attended a Gator football game. All I could think about that friday night as he headed out to cheer on "his" Gators was the rain! When I saw him the next day I was waiting for him to say something about how it rained the entire game. Instead, he had a big smile on his face as he talked about the events of that evening and how it brought back a lot of fond memories from his days as a "Gator" football player. My Uncle Bob lived in Floria most of his adult life, but there were two things about his hometown he always loved - the Pittsburgh Steelers and Gateway Gator football! If anyone has a story they would like to share with his family, we would love to hear it.

Debbie (Shushereba) Holmes

Class of 1967

Reading was fundamental to mom, volunteer By Tim Wright TRIBUNE-REVIEW Tuesday, June 21, 2005 Debbie Holmes always emphasized the importance of an education, both to her own children and the thousands she aimed to inspire through her children's stories, her family said. As a homemaker and school volunteer, she spent hours reading to her favorite audience: children. Before she became ill, Mrs. Holmes had crafted several children's stories that she was shopping to publishers. Deborah L. Holmes, of Monroeville, died Sunday, June 19, 2005, at her home after a long battle with small-cell lung cancer. She was 55. "She was a very compassionate and caring person who always took care of other people. That's what she was known for," said her eldest daughter, Shannon Guenzel, of North Huntingdon. "Everybody always said that she was the nicest person that they had ever met, and it's not too often that you go your whole life without anyone disliking you." Mrs. Holmes was born Oct. 29, 1949, in Wilkinsburg. She was the daughter of the late George and Wanda Shushereba. Shortly after graduating from Gateway High School in Monroeville, she worked at several jobs in the Monroeville area in the secretarial and bookkeeping fields. On Sept. 4, 1968, she married Robert Q. Holmes, whom she had met in high school. The couple had two daughters, Shannon and Autumn. Guenzel and her husband, Chris, are trying to get her four completed stories published. "She definitely stressed how important education was, and she always encouraged me to teach and volunteer and help others as well along the way," Guenzel said. Mrs. Holmes is survived by her husband, Robert; daughters Shannon Guenzel and her husband, Chris, of North Huntingdon, and Autumn Lauritzen and her husband, Daniel, of Irwin; sisters Jorja Seidl, of Supply, N.C., Michele Parente, of Monroeville, and Tracy Neiderhiser, of Bluffton, S.C.; and two grandchildren.

Vicki Drown(Hughes)

Class of 1968

My mother, Vicki Drown(Hughes), was a wonderful person. Although life tended to be a struggle, she always persisted. My brother and I have wonderful memories of our childhood. Halloween costumes were always handmade with perfection. Second hand clothes were purchased and made to look as if they were "designer" garnments. Trips to the duck pond and Storybook forest seemed a wonderous occasion. Whenever an opponent had checked me in a high school hockey game, she would politely yell at that horrible offender. Mom always had a positive outlook on life and it was certain anyone who was around her caught that bug as well. She used to recall her memories of getting ready for school to the full length version of "in-a-gadda-da-vida" and I hope the next time you here here this tune, you might think of her. She left us in June 2005 as a result of a brain tumor, a shock to all of us. She will be missed greatly. Devin Hughes

Class of 1974

Donny was killed in a auto accident in December of 1979 in Florida. Everyone who knew Donny knew him as one of the nicest people they ever met. He always had a smile, a twinkle in his eye and great sense of humor. He moved to Huston to find work in 1978 and then followed the love of his life to Florida. Donny was a great friend, we played baseball together, went on many fishing trips (sometimes taking my future wife and hyperactive oldest son (whom Donny kept amused) and worked together roofing. It’s been 30 years and it’s like yesterday, I saw him a few weeks before the accident and he was doing great, he talked about getting married, starting a family & having a big house so friends could come and visit. His gravestone epitaph is apropriate: “Tread softly, an unfinished dream lies here.” He will always be missed & loved by his family and all those who knew him.

Tres LaNaire McLaughlin

Class of 1981

I was not particularly close to Tres, but I thought he deserved a memorial on this site. The following is excerpted from his obituary in the Times Express dated October 23, 1985. "Former teammates and friends paid their final respects to Tres McLaughlin, age 23, who was shot to death outside a nightclub where he worked in El Paso, Tx. Among the mourners at the funeral was Tres' boyhood friend and ex-teammate, John Gay, Jr., who is the starting fullback at WVU. Tres and John were sensations at Gateway, Tres as a defensive back and John as running back. They both started Varsity as sophomores, the first sophomores to do so for Coach Antimarino since 1965. Both Tres and John also starred on Gateway's Track and Field team. Tres was offered a football scholarship to the University of Texas at El Paso and was a first string defensive tackle. He majored in Physical Ed and wanted to become a high school football coach. Tres was working as a bouncer to help supplement finances for the remainder of his education. He was killed by a bullet to the heart fired by drunk and disorderly customer he had escorted out of the bar." Tres was a funny, inspired, and thoughtful young man.

I know the 'crew' from that time misses them both very much & went through an immensely rough time after their deaths. I miss Glenn & Tony as well as the friendships that included the entire 'gang'- we lost more than them.

Brian Joseph Campbell

Class of 1984

Unfortunately this site was not in existence at the time of my brother Brian's death. However, I thought it fitting to memorialize him on these pages now. Brian was the youngest of 8 children born to Paul and Marilyn Campbell of Turnpike Gardens. Myself(Greg), Mark, Paul, Jeff, Kim, Lisa, Christine and of course Brian spanned more than a decade of Gateway graduates from 1968 to 1984. Brian died unexpectedly on August 10, 2003. As the oldest brother and having left home to attend college during Brian's school years, I did not really get to know him. It was only after he became an adult that I really saw the gentle man that he had become. And even in his death, I learned things from complete strangers that I never new about my little brother. He had such a caring and compassionate heart to everyone that he came in contact with. Our family misses him greatly, especially his wife Joyce and their daughter Carisa. If you knew Brian and have a story you would like to share with us, please send me an email. Christine is also registered on this site under the Class of 1983.

Tracy Braverman

Class of 1985

Tracy Braverman was taken away from us at the age of 41. I have been best friends with her for nearly 36 years, and we had great times until the end. Tracy did well for herself, as she became a radiologist tech and helped many people at St. Margrets Hospital, not to mention how dedicated she was to three different fire companies in Monroeville, Pitcairn and Wilmerding. She had no enemies and was loved by many. Tracy loved life, her family, her two cats, and thousands of people she has encountered. I am lost without her, but I will find my way back to my "running buddy". There will be no rock concerts, girls night out, frantic phone calls, only loving memories. Those of you that knew her, please take one moment to reflect on one of the many times or encounters you had with her, it will make you laugh.

I thought it would be nice to remember fellow classmate, Sandy Jones. She died in her sleep during a house fire about 4:30am on December 26,1983. Had she lived, she likely would have been part of the Gateway class of 1986. She lived in Garden City, attended Garden City Elementary (does not exist now), Evergreen Elementary, and Monroeville Junior High. She actually never made it to Gateway SHS to have the opportunity to share the great memories that Shane's website affords us. I remember one of her closest friends was Denise Moon.

He is sorely missed by all of his family and his countless number of friends. Life is truly not the same without him.

IN MEMORY OF OUR CLASSMATES:

Please do not feel you grieve alone
For I am grieving too,
If I could be with anyone
I'd want to be with you.

My work on earth was quickly done
I left you all too soon,
But know that I am happy here
And safe in God's own home.

I'm with you every single day
I wipe away your tears,
But you have work there still to do
You're needed there for years.

So let your heart remember me
With happiness not tears,
Make every day a special day,
In you I live my years. -Rae Bromley

Each one of us in our family were very, very different people, sometimes closer to our friends than each other. Jeremy wasn't perfect, but he was my big brother, and he was a good man.

Sadly, Doug passed away on October 15th, 2004. Those of you who knew Doug, know that music was a huge part of his life. He taught himself to play the drums, guitar, harmonica, as well as other instruments. He was not only known for his love of music, but also for his incredible sense of humor, and for being a friend in the truest sense of the word. I was deeply saddened to hear about his accident. The turn out at his funeral was incredible. It truly showed just how many people were touched by such an amazing young man. Doug, you are, and always will be missed by many people every day.---Chris Williams

From the Post-Gazette, Sunday, June 3, 2007 (I. Harrison Kriegish): Cody Michael Moy, a popular student and athlete from Monroeville, had an old soul despite his youthful exuberance. Those who knew Mr. Moy, or "Codeman" as he was called, described him as an upstanding gentleman, known for his seemingly unbreakable work ethic, kindness, and selfless devotion to those around him. Demi Cuccia

Class of 2009

Demi, a beautiful, vibrant, and cherished family member lost to a senseless tragedy on Wednesday, August 15, 2007. I watched Demi grow from a darling toddler, always smiling and happy into a lovely young girl, and then into a beautiful teen. She was sweet, caring, and full of life. How sad a day it was for all of us to hear the news of her death. She will be so very deeply missed by everyone who loved her, but in my heart I know that she is at peace with our Lord and with her loving great grandparents "Nunnie" and "Pop". We will see you agin one day Demi. Until then, you will be in our memories and in our hearts. I love you. Cousin Donna

Site Dedication...

This web site is dedicated to two of our personal friends and former Gateway family:

Ed "Joby" Dalton - Class of 1986, a well-loved Sax player who attended South Junior High School, and then Gateway High School from 1981 to 1985, and relocated in the middle of his senior year (and football season) to the Atlanta, GA area. Ed was well-known and loved by his classmates --- "Everybody knew and wanted to know Ed". Sadly, Ed passed away in 1998 after a fight with Leukemia. Does anybody from South Junior High remember when Ed put a cheerleader's top on and did a cheer in the middle of the South Gym floor during a big basketball game???

Mr. John Sgroi, long-time Assistant Principal at South Junior High and Gateway High School, a good friend and visionary who founded the Gateway High School Video Club and pioneered the live broadcast of Gateway Football games from the roof of the old rickety pressbox back in the early 1980's. Mr. Sgroi passed on in the early 1990's.

If you knew either of these people and have a story or experience to share with us, please Contact Us.
